Sex is a healthy part of a loving relationship. It is okay for most women to have sex when they are pregnant because sex is safe during pregnancy.

Some of the things you should know concerning sex during pregnancy:

1. You can have sex if only your pregnancy is healthy. You should utilize safe sex positions during pregnancy which are safe and comfortable.

2. The baby isn’t hurt during sex. The amniotic fluid in the womb protects the baby during sex.

3. If you experience pregnancy complications you should not have sex during pregnancy as it can be unsafe.

4. If after making love you have leaking amniotic fluid, painful cramps, and heavy bleeding, you should call your doctor or provider immediately.

Situations when sex is unsafe during pregnancy

Sex isn’t safe during pregnancy if you experience some pregnancy complications now or you had some complications in the past. You should not have sex if you have any of the following complications:

1. You are pregnant with twins, triplets or even more.

2. If you had a miscarriage or you are at risk of having a miscarriage in this pregnancy.

3. Your cervix opens too early when you are pregnant a condition known as incompetent cervix.

4. When one has placenta previa; a condition in which the placenta lies too low in the womb and cover part or the entire cervix.

How can you make sex safe during pregnancy?

The baby isn’t hurt when having sex during pregnancy. The amniotic fluid and the muscles of the womb that surrounds the womb protect your baby. The mucous plug assists in keeping your baby free from infections. Even if sex is safe during pregnancy you should protect your baby from some infections you can get when having sex. Some of the things you can do to keep your baby safe include:

1.You should protect yourself from sexually transmitted infections. STI’s cause problems for the baby during pregnancy as well as during birth. You can get STIs from oral, anal, or vaginal sex.

2. You should not blow air into your partner’s vaginal when having oral sex. Blowing of air into your partner’s vagina causes an air embolism which can cause severe problems for your partner and they baby.

3. It is not safe to have anal sex. This is because the anus has a lot of bacteria. Hence if you have vaginal sex after having anal sex, you will get an infection from the bacteria in your vagina.

It is safe to have sex during pregnancy only if your pregnancy is healthy. Sex during pregnancy doesn’t hurt the baby as the baby is protected by the amniotic fluid and the womb muscles.
